A potent classic. A wonderful, comforting film that stands within time.
I remember clearly, as a young child watching this film with my brothers and
one sister. From the opening shots of all the dishes prepared, to the very
humbling end, it recognizes how vital food plays such a role in culture, family,
values, and communication.
The significance that derives from this film is the showing of how food is used
as a powerful clout of the soul. Rather than being just substance consumed to
sustain life, we are shown in this picture that through food, we understand life
and deterge the inadequate notions that leave us unfulfilled.
Much in life is left to argue, complicate, and distress. Here we are shown that
the family always comes back to one central location, which is around the table
surrounded by a meal. What can be counted for relief at the table is a sense of
togetherness and belonging. As the characters weed through individual troubles
and affairs, around prideful cooked dishes they find an opportunity for fitness,
sanity, and love.
Ita^£á^(TM)s no wonder this movie has lasted so long in memory. Once in awhile,
Ia^£á^(TM)ll pop it in and enjoy the master chef go through the motions of creating
artistic cuisine as if this were my back yard of Asian food network.
I highly recommend watching this movie with some family and friends. Be sure to
have a full stomach or you might find yourself pausing to make a run in the kitchen.
Enjoy.
